I felt very fresh since I hadn’t made such reflections for long. Activities in 81BASTARDS contribute a lot to ones done individually, from which I can learn a lot as a human soul first before I work as an artist.

I myself first didn’t think of me to be engaged in group activities, The trigger was when I received an offer from *SETSUZOKU; when I was thinking I really didn’t want to do live paint, ”Yoshi47” I had contacted often then invited me as: “As we have such and such plans, why don’t you join us in doing something weird?”, which was the starting point. The name of the unit we two kicked off was determined on “81BASTARDS”. I was also confident that I had experienced various things thus far and thought that working with yosh47 would give out a good piece of work by synergy; but it did one with an image contrary to what I’d expected for me to feel frustrated after a long while (“long”). The performance itself was very new to us; our audience coming over also enjoyed it, rather being successful, while I felt very fresh since I hadn’t made such reflections for long. 81BASTRADS was supposed to perform only when called on rather as a limited unit for SETSUZOKU; I didn’t expect it to grow to be such a big group (surprise).

Having known our activities, Jun Inoue (hereafter, “Mr. Jun”) told me that he wanted to join us. Participation of Mr. Jun added to momentum to three of us, in which later Mr. Naoki (SAND NAOKI) took part to make it 4 of us, which further was enhanced by joining of OT (OT TATOO) to add to drawing power as 5 with the number of members with versatility ever on the increase, with the direction on how to accept orders set by me to let us go do whatever we perceived as fun whether it was cool or uncool! Over time, as we felt the needs to leave archive for each project, RiO Yamamoto, a photographer, Satoshi Yamamoto, a visual author and DJ LZA were invited for the number of members to well exceed 10. At the onset, we all had to grope our way but now we are used to the sense of free-style to be in a good harmony. Activities in 81BASTARDS contribute a lot to ones done individually, from which I can learn a lot as a human soul first before I work as an artist. When I was working as an individual, I didn’t have to get pissed as individual problems were solely mine; working in a group as 81BASTARDS, however, I started to get angry when necessary, sometimes quarreled, and our opinions clashed with each other, or I from time to time had to smother my ego not to stand out as an individual; where because I considered how to show off as a group, I first-hand experienced the difference between ones done individually and ones done as a group. Among all, 81BASTARDS is like a real family, with the activities with my members truly enjoyable.

81BASTARDS may just want to stay a free group, not having a set direction. An individual, for being an artist and past achievements, has to show his direction.

81BASTARDS may just want to stay a free group, not having a set direction. An individual, for being an artist and past achievements, has to show his direction. 81BASTARDS, however, keeps an image to have been doing various things free and unconstrained, which has been what we wanted to do anyways. As 81BASTARDS does not have such restrictions, it can be used as a stage on which someone wants to try a new thing. Even if he makes a mistake, that can be followed by his members. I am not to say you can rely on numbers, but its finishes can be covered in any way with the power of such teamwork. It is rare to be able to engage in such experiments while receiving money, right? On the other hand, we are not to leave client works as they are within the solid professional scope of ours, and it’d be better for us to stay on course. For me, it’s where I can do what I like to do and stay free. Upon accepting offers for work, I sometimes consider on balance whether one should be accepted by me as an individual or by 81BASTARDS for the benefit of the client, for I think about how it should be conveyed to the end users in the end.

I tend to be inspired more when I am moving my body than by musical or visual parts. Like I want to retain the good sensation or feeling that time.

In recent days, I just wake up in the morning, go to the study, work and come home, an ordinary life for me. I less often go to drink, with importance rather placed on my private life. I tend to be inspired more when I am moving my body than by musical or visual parts. Like I want to retain the good sensation or feeling that time. The influence such feeling brings to me and my works is huge; I’ve continued so far for I love such culture; with all these included as myself, I hope my audience can see what I do because I love, behind such activities.

Certainly, the broader the scenes or fields we work in get, the increased the demand will be; but I’ve come to think that it is meaningless if you don’t make your individuality stand out beyond that. I am not interested in how the current art market is or something; but I am rather living honestly to myself thinking about what I should do to stay myself.

Now I do not think of Japan’s art industry as much as I did before. As it comes down to by doing what I want to live my own life, I’ve thought it is meaningless to talk of scenes or other. What I’ve felt most since the late 2002’s when I made my shows in various foreign countries to around 2013 is that works sell well in countries in Europe and Americas, It is not that only the rich purchase such works but that everyone will within the scope of his / her own budget, where the stance itself to go to gallery in the first place greatly differed from that in Japan. For Japanese, gallery is a place to go to for watching; for Europe and Americas, one is a place to go to with the assumption that you have a will to make a purchase if you spot a preferred work. Robustly, 80% of Japanese just come over to watch; 80% of people over there have a will to purchase on the contrary, where how renowned an artist is matters far less.

The youngest customer of mine was a high school student, saying he wanted to buy whatever work he could buy with a 100$ bill he had with him, a rare occurring for an artist not well-known like me. Instead, he thought he owned a work of an artist not known yet, as one he had first discovered, which impressed me very much.

In Japan, you are brought up to be the same as everyone else with being different denounced. Therefore, I am responsible and thus want to do my best also for those who cheer me up with a pure mindset.
